a question of storage

The carpeting in the sewing room will be getting ripped up tomorrow to ready things for the new laminate floor.  Of course,  I wanted to finish this last hot pad since I will not be able to sew for a few days, unless I move the sewing machine into the small guest room.  There is room in there for it if I attach an extension cord.  That just leaves the problem of where to set up the drafting table which I use as my cutting table..it will not fit into that space.   But, back to the hot pad.  I found this wonderful fabric in my stash.   It is part of Laurel Burch's  "Holiday Celebration" collection.  I do not know when this fabric was released but I do know it is rare and out of print.  I thought about what I could make out of this fabric and decided to fussy cut some squares out of it and made a hot pad.  I felt that this particular block design would show off the most of this lovely print.  Care must be taken when sewing stripes this narrow since an detour from the 1/4" seam allowance will skew to block.   Now that the hot pad is done, the daunting task of taking EVERYTHING out of the sewing room begins.  There is quite a lot of clutter associated with a person who sews a lot but is not overly organized.  I try to put away the scraps from each project once it is complete but I am the first to admit, this does not happen as often as it should.  I have also noticed that since I have started making the fabric baskets, there are various and sundry narrow strips that I have cut but either didn't need or just haven't used yet.  My friend Margaret stores her stripes by color.  Granted, she has been making the fabric bowls a lot longer than be so has a lot more scraps.  I have a cube-like container that has a lid which was purchased to store compact computer disks on which is not being used so I do believe it will be the perfect temporary storage for my stripes.  Now all I have to do is figure out where the rest of those stacks of fabric are going to go!
