I have been working my way through the process of attaching the triangles to the kites....6 colors down, two to go. Got a little side tracked yesterday what with the Christmas shopping for stocking stuffers and then zumba class this morning. Christmas cards have not been finished yet.....but a day without sewing is like a day without sunshine
It's a lot of fun to make a baby quilt but it is even more fun when it is being made specifically for someone. My niece Emily is expecting her second child and the ultrasound has indicated that it is a girl so this quilt is for her. I always like to check that I am doing things correctly so before I cut out the entire quilt, I cut out enough to be able to assemble one block.
Today when I started to do the cutting out for the baby blanket, it because clear that I had misread the number of pieces I would need to cut out...it is 80 triangles from the black and 80 kites (10 from each of the 8 fabrics), for a total of 160...YIKES! To make half the cuts, a strip the length of the triangle is cut out from the black fabric, which is folded in half, then I traced the triangle onto the fabric with this caulk pencil I have and then proceed to cut without unfolding the fabric...wha-la, half the cuts.
OK, so I have finally gotten to the point that I can now start my personal sewing since all merchandise is now in the stores and I have caught up with some of my personal chores such as house work, shopping, etc. I really like making baby blankets and a few months ago I spotted this adorable fabric and it came in a kit AND it was on sale.
Once I got the stocking done using the snowflake and Christmas lights fabric the thought was wouldn't it be nice to have an apron and some hot pads using these fabrics. The stocking hot pad and the tree hot pad a
Last year, I made new stockings for myself and for my husband Tim and my Daughter Meagan. Santa left them under the tree filled with goodies. They were a big hit and larger than the old ones. Meagan must have really liked hers since she gave me an order this year to make two for her best friends. I did a bit more patchwork this time around on the first one I made and it took me most of the week to make the first one. I had intended to applique one of their names on the cuff but drawing letters backwards so they could be fused onto the cuff proved to be a bit more of a challenge and I still had another stocking to build so I left it blank.
My Husband has been after me for a while now to make him a cover for his Kindle. I went so far as to send away ( and pay $$) for instructions. When they came he told me it was far too elaborate for what he wanted. Both sides folder in, there was a pocket for credit cards and a very fancy closure. He wants to be able to hang on his Kindle like it is a book with a cover when he is reading. Today I found a wonderful blog http://whipstitchfabrics.com/blog/kindle-cover-tutorial/ with very simple instructions and it would end up being "book-like". The only change I made was that I didn't have any long elastic to close it with so I sewed a big button on one side and an elastic pony tail holder on the other side. Problem solved!
Who would think one would run into mahjong fabric? I first spied the red fabric with the Chinese calligraphy on it and teamed it up with the gold fabric. It was then that I saw the mahjong fabric and fortune would have it, it went nicely with the other two fabrics. It was my plan to make a reversible apron from the red and gold fabrics and then take the leftovers from that apron and use them in conjunction with the mahjong fabric to make a tri-colored apron. Since the mahjong fabric is directional, the block size I would need to make the tri-colored apron would not be possible so doing some patchwork where the mahjong fabric would have been placed seemed to be the answer.
How exciting, I am now going to offer children's reversible aprons on my website. This dog fabric is really cute. Wish I made these back when my daughter was little. She loved to stand at her easel and paint and also, help out around the house. Once she outgrew wearing bibs, something like this would have really come in handy. I have never seen a reversible children's apron so I am kind of excited about this. I'm for anything to help make parent's busy lives a little easier. Hope to make lot's more of these
I have been on the road the last 5 days delivering holiday merchandise. Today was my last delivery and I am feeling like I should do something to celebrate but am not sure what. I am in two places this year that I have never done before. One is the the annual fund raiser at the Snow Farm www.snowfarn.org. My husband Tim and I took a ride out there (about an hour away) to deliver my work on Sunday. As you can see from the photos he took is is indeed a very rural setting
