Thought I would share some of the photos I took of the balsam sachets and pillows I made up featuring the astrological fabric. Some fabrics that feature a block pattern leave room around the blocks for the seam allowance. This fabric doesn't so in order not to waste a great deal of the fabric what was going to be required is fussy cutting between the blocks and then appliqueing them.
Happy 24th Birthday to my daughter Meagan, a Libra. One might be wondering what this has to do with sewing. On Monday I was rummaging through my stash to see what other fabrics might get included into my holiday collection. As I was pulling out fabrics, my eyes fell onto this astrological fabric I bought several moons ago so I pulled it along with the other fabric I had paired with it for making an apron. I tossed all the fabrics I had pulled onto the large cutting table I have in the basement near where the fabrics are stored. One thing I noticed right away was that this one dark orange fabric with a metallic swirl that I had purchased to coordinate with another group of fabrics, simply called to be paired with the astrological fabric.
Since I had made 2 spiral and dot aprons and only one tri-colored apron from the scraps, there was plenty left over for a couple of matching hot pads. Since the spiral fabric has a more modern feel to it, it harmonies well with this tic tac toe design.
To keep my costs down it is necessary to try and use up all my scraps .Today was tri-colored apron day. When I first started making aprons, it was a bit of a quandary what to do with the scraps once the aprons were cut out. It was a sizable piece of fabric that was left over. A reversible apron requires 2 yards of fabric. Once a 29" wide apron was cut out of a 42" wide piece of fabric....that was a lot of waste
Autumn has always been my favorite time of year. Mother nature is about to put on a beautiful show for us here in New England. It is also the time of year that I start doing my holiday sewing. It is my intention to have my holiday themed work into the stores by the first week of November so now is usually the time I start working on my holiday collection.
Today is check book cover day. This involves fusible web and interfacing. The main body of the check book is two 7" squares fused onto double-sided stiff fusible web. The pockets are 6" x 7" rectangle fused onto single sided interfacing. This is then folded in half and stitched along the the folded edge (see first photo).
Today was my day to work at the Shelburne Arts Co-op, which I have been a working member of for the part 5 years. I like being a working member there because it gets up up close and personal to my customers AND it has the added benefit of getting me out of my studio 2 days/month.
Made this maple leaf hot pad this morning. I found the pattern for it on a this website http:\\quilting.about.com I googled maple leaf quilt block and it was one of the sites that came up. In fact, one can download all sorts of free quilt patterns from this site. I made a 6" block and then added the dark green batik border which really made the block pop.
Today is soup day. This time of year much soup gets made due to the harvesting of the garden. Minestrone and borscht, my two favorites. Not much sewing going on but...
I recycle my Christmas tree every year into balsam sachets and pillows. We set up the tree in the large 3 season room above our carport. There are sliders out to this room from both the kitchen and the living room. Since I am allergic to balsam, it is nice to be able to enjoy the tree without having to inhale it. This year’s tree was a Grand Fir and to aid it drying it out, I untrimmed the tree and left it standing up until June. Normally we take it out to the garage once the decorations are taken off of it. Though this area is unheated, it gets a lot of sunlight which definitely got the drying process off to a good start. By June the tree was quite dry but the needles were still hanging on so it still needed to be processed.
