Since we are going to be on retreat next week it was necessary for me to get EVERYTHING ready for the fiber arts show that is going up at the Shelburne Arts Co-op on July 2nd, The questionable name of the show is "Fiber is good for you". I am sincerely hoping folks realize it isn't about Metamucil
The Christmas tree finally came down yesterday since it was pretty much dried out. It gets set up out on the 3 season room which is separated from the rest of the house by sliders. This is necessary since both my husband and I are allergic to balsam. While it was still in the tree stand, I trimmed off the branches. Now I will start processing it so it can be used in pillows and sachets. A small amount of heat is necessary to be able to easily strip the needles off so I have loaded some on the branches into the insulted box that has a 200 watt light bulb in it that my husband made me just for this purpose. I call it the balsam safe since it is about the same size as a small floor safe.
It is rather difficult to get motivated to stay inside and sew in the Summer. The warm breezes and lazy hazy days do not lend themselves to being inside. I know that technically it isn't Summer yet but since it is rainy weather today and working outside is not an option, it seemed like a good time to make a few more balsam pillows. When Laurel Burch's collection"Celestial Dreams" was released, I bought a yard of it and it has been sitting in my stash ever since. Thinking that it would make a nice addition to the Shelburne Arts Cooperative's Fiber Arts show in July, I designed and FINISHED 3 balsam pillows today using the fabric.
Took advantage of the rainy weather yesterday to make some balsam pillows. The first one I made out of this fun cat fabric I put cut the center square from the cat fabric at an odd angle and then sewed the blue fabric to the side. I then used that angles as a template to but the top and bottom blue stripes so that when the yellow corners where added they would follow the same angle as the pillow center. This took a lot of time and fussing about. The next two I decided to make like a crazy quilt block.
The Arts Co-op that I am a member of is having a Fiber Arts focus show in July so I have been sewing up a storm for that. "Nature's Helix" which I blogged about making http://newenglandfiberarts.com/node/108 was made to put in this show. This morning I finally managed to finish the carrot market bag I started last week. This too I am putting in the show. I got some what side tracked getting it finished due to the on slot of out door tasks that needed to get done while the weather was pleasant, which is truly was most of last week and into the weekend.
Since today it is rainy with the tail end of a tropical storm moving through New England , time to get back to sewing so I made a unisex apron and 2 matching hot pads from this wonderful Kopepelli fabric I had in my stash. My thinking was that it would make a really nice Father's Day gift to some lucky guy, I used all the brown batik fabric making the apron so I needed to come up with a fabric that would go with the teal fabric and the kopepelli fabric. Last year when were were on vacation I checked out all the local fabric stores in the area as I always do and found this delightful fabric in the remnants bid marked down so I of course grabbed it. It just happened to be the one that coordinating nicely with the other two fabric so I used it as one of the background fabrics in the hot pads. I even came up with another idea for a bit of a different design for another hot pad but that will be for another day!
Made this purple fabric bowl yesterday. The bowl has 5 different fabrics going on. Since the lavender fabrics are fairly close in value, I wanted to see what a gradual change in color would look like. The lavenders coordinated with the print that I used for the stripe. I did a "once around" with the lime at the top and bottom of the print stripe to add a bit of pop to the bowl. I consider this size bowl a large.
