Today is a snow day so I thought I would take the opportunity to not only update my blog but wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! What I wanted to share in this entry is my first fabric basket with attached handles. What I have been making up until now are the built in kind. Recently I was browsing through a book about fabric bowls and there were several different types of decorative attached handles so I thought, why not give it a try? I have some heat activated webbing that I use for the check book covers and thought, YES, this would be the perfect material to give the handles some shape.
My last blog entry was about making tic-tac-toe blocks. Since I was on a roll with tic-tac-toe hot pads. I pulled this spiral fabric out of my stash and incorporated it into a few tic-tac-toe blocks As I was looking at them together I thought...WOW, theses would made a nice table runner. I had purchased this tone on tone black dot for another purpose but it came to mind as I was thinking abut what fabric I could use for the sashing. Over the weekend, I manager to finish the quilt top finish and the quilting. Now it was time to do the binding. I REALLY wanted to use the same fabric for the binding that I used for the sashing but alas and alack, I did not have enough of the fabric left to do a standard bias binding with mitered corners so, off the the internet to see what I could find.
I found this wonderful folk art fabric this summer in the Poconos. It was in a bargain bin with other discounted fat quarters. The second I saw it, I could immediately visualize the tic tac toe hot pads I wold make out of it. I first learned how to make these tic tac toe blocks from "Quilters Playtime" by Dianne S. Hire. I find this block not only easy but fun to make. The suggestions she makes on what colors and fabrics to use, I find very helpful. I usually opt for strong fabrics and a lot of contrast with the inserts.
