When inspiration strikes

One never know when inspiration will strike.  When it does, one should act on it ...right?  Of Course!  Yesterday I found a remnant of a really nice snowflake fabric so I decided to purchase it.  Now it needed a couple of fabrics to so with it.  I spied this really nice very deep teal fabric with metallic gold pinecones and spray of pine needle which set off the snowflake fabric in a particular way.  I immediately thought "ah, hot pads!"  I looked around a bit more and found a fat quarter of a light green but basically the same color way..

I got out these fabric this morning and started thinking about what sort of hot pad I could make.  I pulled out Judy Hopkins "501 Rotary-Cut Quilt Blocks" to see what I could find.  I don't know what # this particular block was but it is called Black Spruce and I could immediate visualize the fabric I had purchased the day before but OMG, what a lot of work for just a hot pad...why not a wall hanging.  I felt that this wall hanging would make a good addition to the holiday show at the Shelburne Arts Co-op...only problem, my neighbor Marie is going to take my work into the Co-op tomorrow which will save me an hour and a half round trip to delivery it in time to be hung for the show which doesn't give me much time.  I figured if I really busted my butt and skipped lunch I could get it done.

One of the things that is part of this block are 3 flying geese units.  I looked up on the internet the fastest way to make them....so I got to learn a new technic, which is always nice.  Here is the link to the tutorial I found http://www.connectingthreads.com/tutorials/flying_geese-make_em_fast-two... I used method #2 since it yields 2 flying geese units without any waste.  The block called for 3 units.  I ended up making a 9" block and then using the pine cone fabric for the border.  I machine quilted "in the ditch" around the snowflake fabric which I used as the background.  Since it was going to be a wall hanging, I sewed a sleeve on the back but what to use to hang it with?  Why not go with the tree theme?  I went out into my back yard when these is a bit of a pine forest and found a nice little branch to use as the hanger.  I did finish the quilt and dropped it off with Marie this afternoon so not only did I get a make nice wall hanging  but also saved a bit of driving...NICE!
