Since I don't have any spooky Halloween pictures, I posted this picture instead. These are part of my North Quabbin Woods holiday collection. I had a tiny bit of the skiing cat fabric left from making a patchwork stocking for my daughter last year so made up a balsam pillow and a hot pad. The red and yellow sachet/ornament was also made from scraps. The tree hot pad not only has a matching table runner but also a balsam pillow and sachet.
It's 62 degrees, the sun is peeking out and the power is on, I am counting my blessings. I must be getting near the end of the holiday sewing since the balsam is running out.. Last year I made up these 4-1/2" crazy quilt blocks but did not put them to use. This morning I appliqued some trees onto them and fashioned ornaments out of them.
before I start the afternoons cooking, I wanted to post the pictures of the rustic sachets and also the holiday balsam pillows and sachets I finished this weekend. Since they look to be the same size once I cropped them, the 6" holiday pillows are on top and the sachets are on the bottom. Even managed to fit in a visit to the art gallery at Smith College on Sunday, A rather impressive collection. Well, off to the kitchen.
How did it get to be Saturday already??? I see that my last entry was last weekend....oops. So, I did get the insul-bright and I did get the hot pads made. On Monday morning I was all set to take a photo of them and the battery in the camera was dead. Photo session was going to have to wait. I finally got to the store on Tuesday and made the executive decision to invest in a battery charger. They rest of the week was spent working on balsam pillows and sachets.
I have really been enjoying Fall this year in all it's splendor. We were lucky enough to catch the foliage 2 weeks ago at it's peak when we visited my Dad in the Catskills. Last weekend the local foliage was at it's peak. This weekend, what we refer to as the Valley (the Connecticut river valley just south of us) was at it's peak. New Salem is located on the eastern edge of the Connecticut River Valley
Part of this weeks production was 2 chili pepper aprons. The first one was a 2 fabric reversible - orange reversing to the chili peppers. I purchased enough of the orange fabric to make a second apron and at the time, I found a yellow tone on tone fabric which would play nicely with the orange and chili pepper fabrics. There was only a fat quarter of the yellow fabric but if I was careful, I could made it work. So, picture this, I have the color block side all assembled , the ties cut out and sewn, the orange side cut out along with the orange pocket and it is now time to make the contrasting pocket for the plain orange side. It is then that the discovery is made that the remaining chili pepper fabric is not wide enough to make a pocket out of....it is < 13" wide and a pocket is 14" and anything less makes a skimpy pocket.
We had a lovely trip to Maine and a much needed break. Dropped off the aprons and table runner at Mainely Quilts in Kennebunk on Sunday. It is a lovely shop that is in a carriage house behind the Waldo Emerson Inn. They have been selling by work since 2007.
In preparation for a trip up to Maine on Sunday, blueberries was the theme this week. A miss-cut of the blueberry fabric resulted in a different design than usual for a colorblock apron. Rather than 2 side by side 14 1/2" blocks, there was a need for smaller blocks so the 14 1/2 inch block were placed in the center of the design flanked my two smaller matching blocks.
This past weekend we went out to the Catskills to visit my Dad. He still lives in my home town of Roxbury, NY. The trip up into the mountains once we crossed the Hudson was nothing less than spectacular
I have been looking forward to working with this tree fabric which is from Laurel Burch's Bountiful Blessings collection since I purchased it in January. First I made a tri-colored apron and then from the scraps, adding a few odds and ends from my stash, I made 3 balsam pillows and a hot pad. My husband and I are off this weekend to visit my Dad. The sun is dancing though the fall foliage, should be a beautiful trip!
