Plays With scraps
Today's Challenge? Take a pile of scraps and make something out of them. One of the best use of scraps is the log cabin block. One only needs narrow strips to make it happen. Why not make a few log cabin blocks, sew together 2 for a apron pocket and any left over can be made into balsam hot pads. I pulled out the scraps that looked best with the turquoise and blue fabric knowing that the outside dark logs would be the dark blueberry fabric. With these parameters, I started planning. I had enough of the chosen fabrics to make 3 log cabin blocks. The flip side of the apron would be a tri-colored color block using fat quarters of these coordinating blue and green fabrics I had on hand. I wanted to work some blueberry fabric into this side of the apron so I made a batch of crazy quilt blocks using the 3 fabrics in the apron and throwing the blueberry fabric into the mix. It ends up having a scrappy look to it with the added bonus of 2 left over blocks that can be made into , you guessed it, balsam hot pads! The pocket on the tri-colored side is the turquoise fabric from the flip side, It seemed a little plain so I stitched a 1-1/2" scrap of blueberry fabric along the back of the pocket then folded it over onto the the top of the pocket and folded a very small edge of it over and using a blanket stitch attached it along the bottom edge to the pocket. So that it would end up nice and neat, I top stitched it along the top edge also. All this using up of scraps has made me HUNGRY. Both sides of the apron are assembled, the pockets are attached and all that is left to do is to make the ties and stitch the two sides together, turn it right side out, press and top stitch it. BUT it is time to make dinner so that will have to wait until later!!! But I am happy that I have made bit of a dent in all those co-ordinating fabrics that go with the blueberry prints and I am looking forward to using up even more of them over the next week making balsam pillows and sachets.
